Product Review: Snugpak Sleeping Bag

We are all aware that the moment we recharge our energy is sleep. And if you’re an adventure seeker like me, it becomes even more critical when we are camping, climbing a mountain, or hiking.

To reach this goal is crucial to stay warm, dry, and comfortable. Specifically, one element that can put a strain on our rest is temperature. For this reason, it is of fundamental importance to choose a good, warm, and resistant sleeping bag.

The Snugpak Sleeping Bag (available now on Amazon UK) offers all these features. It is a compact, light, and thermally resistant 2 seasons sleeping bag. Furthermore, this product claims to maintain an optimum internal temperature of down to -7°C.

In the following article, we will consider the claims made on this product, emphasizing the best use that can be made of it.

General Description

This Sleeping Bag represents a product that assembles all the most essential qualities of a sleeping bag:

  • It has superior retention of body heat thanks to its mummy shape
  • It has high wicking breathable lining.
  • It has silky soft-touch outer fabric.
  • The package has a compression stuff sack for compact carrying.

With these characteristics, this product should be usable in a wide variety of situations, consistently producing optimal effects.

Size

The product arrives, of course, in its compact packaging. In its packaging, the official website reports a size of 28 x 24cm. After pulling it out the first time, closing it was not very easy, even following the tutorial on the website. In the end, at maximum compression, the product was 34 x 30cm in size. Once you unfold it and it gets filled by air, it reaches a length of 220cm and a maximum width of 80cm.

Colours

Snugpak´s sleeping bag is available in two different colours: ruby red and olive.

As soon as I held the product in my hands, it was clear that its weight and size were not exactly what we would call ‘compact.’ Typically, it’s recommended to bring sleeping bags that weigh no more than 1kg. I think that’s why the product website specifies that it is most useful when you have a vehicle for carrying your camping kit around. Otherwise, this sleeping bag would take up most of the space in the backpack, causing problems concerning the items to be carried.

Materials

The materials used all appear to be of high quality. Similarly, the seams are resistant and allow the product to withstand even significant contractions without being damaged. Specifically, the materials utilised are:

  • Outside:  Aqualight. It is a fabric characterised by high water resistance and silky soft touch.
  • Inside: SuperSoft. It is a silky smooth fabric knitted to be wicking, breathable, and highly durable and pleasant.
  • Insulation: IsoFibre, which is composed of synthetic fibres, which are structured to trap warm air between tiny cavities in the thread. Specifically, this fabric is characterised by retaining heat when wet and being easy to wash.

The Zipper

The bag’s zipper runs from both outside and inside and has two starting locations from where it can be opened. One is close to the head, and the other is close to the feet. These locations give the option for people to open and have their feet or arms out quickly. Around the head, it also has an elastic band that can be adjusted so that the hoodie of the bag can enclose itself around the face.

More about my experience…

Not being a real camping expert, I asked a good friend of mine (hiking enthusiast) to try out this sleeping bag.

We will go through her comments and observations in the next section.

It was necessary to walk a short distance to reach the place where she intended to camp. Compared to the size of other sleeping bags, it is above average, and this makes it challenging to carry it on foot.

Once she reached the camping place and set up the tent, she extracted the sleeping bag without any effort. In total, she slept using the sleeping bag for two nights. Notably, she conducted this test during the summer season in an area with a humid climate. In addition, the sleeping bag was not in direct contact with the underlying surface. Indeed, the first night she used an inflatable insulation mattress. Whereas, the second night she used a tent blanket.

The first place she reached was a forest characterized by high humidity. She slept in a tent, and the temperature was around 21ᵒC with an average humidity of 70%.

The second night she decided to test it in the open air. For this reason, she did not use a tent. Moreover, she changed the test location, and she went to a beach where it rained overnight for circa 3 hours. In general, it was 22ᵒC, with an average humidity of 80%.

Her comments regarding the breathability of the fabrics were very positive. Once again, we would like to point out that the product in question claim that it can be used at lower temperatures (down to -7 °C at the most) and the tests carried out by us were at high temperatures (21 – 22 °C).

On both occasions, the sleeping bag has proven to be thermally comfortable. She described her sleep as homogeneous and not disturbed by excessive temperatures (too hot or too cold). In addition, although high temperatures and high humidity characterised both places, rest was not bothered by excessive sweating.

On the second night, thanks to the presence of heavy and long-lasting rain, she was able to test the product’s water resistance. Its water resistance proved to be optimal and able to block practically every drop of rain. This ensured a dry night’s sleep, even during a cloudburst. Moreover, the outside surface was already dry by the early morning.

Regarding aesthetics, she pointed out that the product has a rather intense red colour coupled with a yellow zipper and that was black on the inside. She also stated that the fabrics, both external and internal, felt synthetic to the touch.

In general, she declared that as a 66kg, 171cm person, there was enough space for her in the bag also to move the legs slightly. She also said that it could be tight for taller people.

The worst part of using this sleeping bag was when it was time to compress it back. Even after watching the tutorial on how to pack it back correctly, it wasn’t easy. In the end, the help of two other people was necessary to compact it back correctly!

Critical Features Review:

  • It has superior retention of body heat thanks to its mummy shape.
  • It has high wicking breathable lining.
  • It has silky soft-touch outer fabric.
  • The package has a compression stuff sack for compact carrying.
PROS CONS
The quality of the seams is excellent. Once opened, it does not return to the size it was when sold.
The fabrics ensured high breathability. Its weight makes it uncomfortable for long journeys on foot.
It has an in-built device for compressing and compacting.    Its size makes it difficult to carry it around on foot.
It is easy to place out. It isn’t easy to pack it back.

If you plan to go on a long trip in a temperate weather place and have a vehicle for travel, this sleeping bag suits you perfectly. It will provide excellent thermal resistance and, even in high temperatures, its breathability will ensure that you sleep without sweating too much.

On the other hand, I will not recommend it for walking trips: its size and weight do not allow easy movement. Also, be careful when folding the product: the operation may take about ten minutes and require the help of several people.

bedroom lighting mood light

Product Review: Philips Smart Lightbulb and Lightstrip

It is now well-known that light is one of the essential elements in our sleep-wake cycle. Indeed, the type of light in the environment is connected to producing different kinds of chemical compounds in our bodies. To understand this, we can look at the diurnal variation of light. While there is more bluish light, we are more inclined to produce excitatory hormones (first and foremost cortisol). On the other hand, during the late afternoon, when the light is reddish - hormones are linked to more relaxing effects (i.e., melatonin). Notably, the production of hormones affects our sleep-wake cycle and interacts with our mood, emotions, and feelings. In other words, the type of light surrounding us and the type and quantity of hormones produced influence our mental life. The reasons listed above make it clear why many sleep experts recommend meticulous care in setting home lighting, particularly in the bedroom.
